FRED FLEISHER

Artists in Residence: June 26th - July 12th, 2025

Fred Fleisher is a Brooklyn-based artist, educator, and curator whose multidisciplinary practice encompasses painting, sculpture, drawing, installation, video, and performance.

His work

His work critically interrogates the paradoxes embedded within contemporary American culture, employing satirical symbolism to examine themes of consumerism, identity construction, collective memory, and the sociopolitical mechanisms underlying late capitalism. By juxtaposing incongruous cultural signifiers, Fleisher foregrounds the ways in which mass production, power structures, and ideological conditioning mediate perception and experience. Through hybridized forms, material alterations, and strategic appropriations, his practice evokes formative encounters with toys and consumer goods, prompting reflection on the ambivalent interplay of nostalgia, alienation, and agency within the performative space of everyday life.

Born in Pennsylvania, Fleisher served in the U.S. Army and completed Ranger School, an experience that continues to shape his artistic practice. He holds a BFA in Painting and Drawing and a BS in Art Education from Penn State University, as well as an MFA in Studio Art from Queens College, City University of New York. Currently, he is an Assistant Professor in the Visual Arts Department at SUNY Old Westbury.

Fleisher has exhibited his work internationally for over two decades, with recent solo exhibitions presented by Brian Leo Projects (New York), Concepto Gallery (Hudson), Rockelmann & (Berlin). His work has regularly appeared in curated exhibitions in New York, as well as shows in Los Angeles, Chicago, Athens, Beijing, and Zurich. His work has been featured in The New York Times, Artforum, and ARTnews, and is included in both public and private collections.
